The industrial Protestantism boom wasn’t limited to the town of Mulhouse; it also developed in the nearby towns and valleys.

THE REFORMED CHURCH IN ILLZACH

Start your tour in Illzach and discover its reformed church, one of the oldest Reformed Protestant churches in France still used today, built in 1698.

THE WALLPAPER MUSEUM IN RIXHEIM

Rue Wilson, on the site of the old Zuber wallpaper factory, discover the small reformed temple and the wall paper Museum. Their “Panoramics” used to embellish all the big European residences.

REFORME CHURCH IN ALTKIRCH, SAINT-LOUIS AND HUNINGUE

South of Mulhouse, a nice drive in the rural area of Sundgau will lead you to the Altkirch church then to the region of Basel where the churches in St. Louis and Huningue mark a strong Protestant presence in this border area.

REFORMED CHURCH AND THE WINE ESTATE IN GUEBWILLER

The area around Guebwiller is marked by a cotton mill, which was planted there in 1808 by Nicolas Schlumberger from Mulhouse. The church, rue des Chanoines, was built shortly after in 1824. A diaconate was founded in 1865 on the same model as the one in Mulhouse and was managed by the parish until 1976. The Schlumberg textile industry also developed mechanical equipment. The NSC group, specialized in textile industry equipment is still today the main industry in Guebwiller and its vicinity. The Alsatian wine lovers will enjoy the stop by the Schlumber Domaines, a symbol of the alliance between manufacture, industry and land, all proper to the Alsatian Protestantism.
